International News
My recent travels in England and Italy were everything I had hoped for and more.
In the last week of July, I attended the International Society for Music Education Conference. The conference was held at the University of Bologna, the world’s oldest university.
What a privilege it was to walk those hallowed halls with colleagues from around the globe, including many ANATS members. I attended several sessions on repertoire choice, music in schools, teacher training and skill development. Vocal education featured strongly on the agenda, and we can hold our heads high as international leaders in this field.
There was, of course, a little time to savour the cultural delights.
One of my personal highlights was seeing Michelangelo’s David for the first time in Florence. This soaring masterpiece of the renaissance is literally breathtaking – for those involved in the arts being in the presence of such greatness is an inspiring experience.
An equally exciting experience was to sit in the audience in Perugia, Italy and to witness a performance by Cassandra Wilson. A great performer, a great band and wonderful location!
Turning to Australian Matters
Members who are not attending the Perth Conference are reminded to vote in the referendum.
The referendum has two main components: some minor wording changes to the constitution and the issue of fee increases.
In relation to fee increases, the National Council is in agreement that these are a necessary part of our growth structure. There has not been an increase since 2002 and we need to at least maintain CPI increases each year.
In my recent travels I noted that our partner organisations in other countries have similar fee structures and offer similar services.
We have a number of initiatives in progress that we will not be able to fund (and therefore grow) without the fee increases. I urge you to consider this in making your decision.
Nominations for National Council
Nominations for National Council are also due by August 22. Please refer to the materials forwarded with your latest Voice of ANATS for details regarding this process.
Local News
The Queensland Chapter recently suffered the loss of three of its members, Lesley Purvis, Rod Taylor and Henry Howell who all died following long illnesses. Lesley, Rod and Henry would be known to many members across the country. Our sincere sympathies are extended to their families.
In late July, Victoria hosted Teachers Unplugged - Technology for Singing Teachers. Thanks to ANATS Stalwart Sally Collyer for leading our Victoria members through the maze of technology for studio and classroom use.
To Perth, and response to the National Conference has been fantastic.
Our numbers are strong, but it’s not too late to attend!! You may have missed the early-bird rate, but you can still join us.
